Gastrointestinal manifestations in Covid-19
Summary:
In addition to symptoms in the respiratory system, covid-19 disease also has gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea, nausea, vomiting or abdominal pain. This is due to the expression of the ACE2 receptor in the intestinal mucosa. Regarding the available treatment options especially in IFN, while corticosteroids have been associated with an increased incidence of infections, there is no similar correlation for biological agents, especially anti-TNF. The important role of the microbiome is seen in the case that its homeostasis is disturbed, with the so-called "dysbiosis". As microbial flora strains can reduce ACE2 receptor expression in healthy populations, it appears that microflora conservation may have a protective effect against covid-19. As shown by the study of patients with Hidradenitis Suppurativa and covid-19 disease, patients receiving biologic therapy are not at greater risk for a more serious outcome of the disease.
