Summary:
Growth is one of the most important tasks of childhood and adolescent development. One of the parameters of growth that is closely monitored is height. A child achieving its optimal height is one of the major goals of a Paediatrician. Short stature is one of the leading causes of referral to a Paediatric Endocrinologist. Short stature in children is defined as a height below 2 standard deviations (-2SD), or under the third percentile for age, gender and appropriate population reference from pubertal stage. Short stature may be either a variant of normal growth or caused by a disease. The early detection of the cause of short stature is crucial for the application of the appropriate treatment. New developments on the field of genetics provide the tools for new diagnostic methods and more individualized therapies.
