Detection of somatic mutations in samples of small cell lung cancer using new generation sequencing technology with aim of the personalized medicine of the patient
Summary:
Small cell lung cancer belongs to the category of neuroendocrine tumors. Its incidence in relation to the total number of lung cancers corresponds to approximately 14%. It’s characterized by the rapid doubling time, the high growth fraction and the early appearance of distant metastases, with the majority of patients already having metastases at the time of diagnosis. This cancer usually has the form of a large mass central to the portal of the lungs with swollen lymph nodes in the mediastinum. The main symptoms are cough and shortness of breath. The incidence of this cancer is closely linked to smoking.
The first aim of this study is to present the basic characteristics of cancer and to link them to different types of mutations. In this section, the role of a functional cell cycle and the result of various gene mutations are examined. At this point, the endogenous and exogenous mutagenic factors and the genes which involved are, also, presented.
The second aim of the study is to present the epidemiology, the causes, and the categories of lung cancer. Moreover, we focus on the analysis of the characteristics of small cell lung cancer and the therapeutic approaches for its treatment.
Finally in the study, the sequencing technologies are reported / listed, starting from the oldest and reaching to the most contemporary, with the aim of analyzing their advantages and their applications. With a final aim of describing their clinical applications in oncology and specifically in small cell lung cancer.
