Summary:
The purpose of this particular undergraduate thesis is the assessment of landslide risks in the
Heraklion prefecture area of Crete island through geospatial analysis.
There’s a particular interest for the investigation of possible landslide occurrences, as the
geomorphology of the prefecture is defined by medium to very steep slopes and the technicalgeological attributes of the area seem to favor the occurrence of landslides. Also, this specific
prefecture is the most densely populated prefecture of the island , therefore it is essential that
safe living conditions are assured by quickly taking measures to prevent the loss of human life
and the structural damage of properties.
Firstly, historical data of landslide incidents within the study area were collected from related
geotechnical reports for the development of a geodatabase which includes the spatial and
descriptive information of the aforementioned landslides. Furthermore, in this stage of the
process, the necessary raster and vector data for the geospatial analysis of the area were
acquired.
The methodology that was used is based on the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP), which
is a multi-criteria decision analysis method used for the identification of locations prone to
landslide occurrences in a GIS environment. According to this methodology, ten (10) crucial
factors causing landslides were defined, followed by the creation of a landslide risk assessment
map of the study area, depending on the influence of each factor. Furthermore, AHP is a very
handful and easy – to – use tool because the researcher is able to either remove, change the
ranking of each factor, or add new factors, depending on the current conditions of the study
area.
