«Attitudes and perceptions of Special Education Primary School teachers towards the use of ICT in Education»
Summary:
Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) is a powerful tool for educators which aim to serve the ideas of differentiated instruction, integration, and the enhancement of the quality of education provided to all students and especially to students with special educational needs. The purpose of this research is to investigate the attitudes and perceptions of special education teachers towards the use of ICT. The research sample consisted of 266 Primary Special Education teachers who serve either in special schools or as Parallel Support companions to children with SEN in public schools in Greece. As a research tool, a questionnaire was conducted, which included questions with demographic data of the sample, the Greek attitude scale towards attitudes on using Information and Communications Technology (ICT) (Roussos, 2007) and recommendations from the Attitude Scale towards Computer Use for Teaching (ASCUT)(Pavlou & Vryonides, 2009). In the present study, positions from several scientific articles dealing with this topic are presented, and in continuation the statistical analysis of the samples collected is given. The results show that attitudes and perceptions of special education teachers are influenced by demographics, such as gender and age. Additionally, the majority of teachers seems to have a positive attitude towards the most common means of ICT, the computer and consequently is in favor of its use in the educational process. Most have been trained in computer use and seem confident in handling it. However, a significant obstacle to its use in teaching is the lack of a personal computer in the classroom. This fact, along with the lack of technical support and appropriate educational material which allows the use of ICT in the classroom, as well as the question of whether today’s school ultimately supports ICT to enhance learning, are important issues that arise and are areas for intervention.
