Issues of Contemporary Vocal Teaching and Pedagogy in 21st Century Greece.
Summary:
The present diplomatic research attempts to present some of the most basic contemporary music styles, to clarify the role of the modern vocal educator and finally, to raise some key issues of teaching and interpretation of the contemporary repertoire, arising from all the bibliographic research, in combination with interviews from modern and classical vocal educators. For the last twenty years or so, research on this issue has been intense and an important educational activity is gradually emerging. Contemporary music now represents a burning issue for vocal educators around the world, with research and literature that highlights and serves the purposes of educators and motivates them to explore more the "simple lesson of contemporary song"
In our country, research on contemporary music pedagogy has been significantly neglected judging by the literature of classical music education in relation to the music of the 20th and 21st century. The main challenge lies in the fact that the field of CCM (contemporary commercial music) lacks a clear and coherent pedagogy that deals with specific techniques related to each style and with the feeling that contemporary music does not need formal education. This research intends to investigate whether in Contemporary Vocal Pedagogy we can find a model that takes into account specific teaching techniques and expressive needs of the contemporary singer, to reconsider some possible restructuring of current modern vocal pedagogy in Greece.
Regarding the study programs of universities and conservatories in Greece, there was a lack of separation in performance and teaching of the subject in relation to some university music institutions abroad, where there is even a separation of different styles of CCM. In our country, modern music education is not even legalized by the state with the aim of obtaining a degree or diploma. In addition, there is no separation between teaching and performance, so we will rely on the experience of vocal teachers in terms of the methods they use.
