School autonomy and the Greek reality: Views of primary school teachers on financial and administrative autonomy
Summary:
School autonomy, widespread in many countries around the world, is being attempted to be applied to the centralized Greek educational system. In the theoretical part of this work, the concept, types, advantages and disadvantages of school autonomy are studied. The concepts of financial and administrative autonomy as well as their effects on education systems are thoroughly analyzed. The research part deals with the search for views on the administrative and financial autonomy of the school unit in the Greek public education system and in particular in primary education. The research involved 137 teachers from primary education in the region of Piraeus. Teachers believe that decentralized education systems deal effectively with its problems, they are willing to take on new responsibilities with conditions. They believe that learning outcomes, career development, leadership, management and funding will improve with increasing autonomy. Decisions such as the position of Principal, issues of teaching and non-teaching staff, evaluation but also issues of school costs, equipment and budget would like to be taken at the school level.
