Summary:
The present thesis examines theoretical treatises and kanonia that are imprinted, anonymously or by name registered, at the codex No.18 of the collection of the Athens Concert Hall Library. This codex, written at the end of the 18th century by an unknown writer, includes several theoretical treatises, many of which have already been examined in the existing Byzantine-Musicological bibliography. The writer, in relation to her profound interest in the shapes and the kanonia encountered in Byzantine theoretical treatises, is faced with the charming challenge of deciphering them. In particular, the present research deals, exclusively, with short theoretical texts and consequent kanonia or even minor supervisory schemes of approach to the theory of the Psaltic Art, in an attempt to decode them and detect their pedagogical reflection as far as the teaching of the Art is concerned. The amount of the present studied and commented theoretical material is not only an integral part of the theory and philosophy of the Modes in general but also a valuable educational aid for the whole theory and practice of the Psaltic Art, the study of which is decisively supporting any attempt to comprehend the quintessence of the Art.
