Tapering for sprint runners
Summary:
The purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of the progressive reduction of training load in the last days before the goal of each athlete. This period is called taper. During this period the training load is reduced, and the training intensity remains high so the athlete manages to achieve maximum performance. The participants were sprinter athletes who participated in national championships. The procedure which followed was the recording of the athletes' training programs during the training period as well as the week before this period. Also, the times that the specific athletes achieved in the national championship were recorded and studied, as well as the times that they achieved in a race before the taper period. After studying the data, it appeared that the times that took place in the national championships and therefore after the tapering period were better than those that the athletes achieved in the races before the taper.
