Original Title:
«Μεσικές Εκδηλώσεις του Death Note και η Κοιλάδα του Ανοίκειου (Uncanny Valley): Η περίπτωση του Ryuk»
Translated title:
"Media Manifestations of Death Note and the Uncanny Valley: The case of Ryuk"
Summary:
A key part of the Japanese media culture is its media mix, which includes two
of the most important and popular media, manga, and anime. These often depict forms of ancient Japanese culture, such as the Shinigami and Yōkai monsters, which have now been mediated, following the country's technological boom. An equally important part of the Japanese media mix is its transmedia storytelling practices, with most of them applying to manga and anime. A typical example is the case study manga Death Note,
which has a total of six media extensions. The varied media versions of Ryuk, one of the characters, are being discussed in relation to the Uncanny Valley (UV). While attempting to place each version on the UV diagram, it was discovered that the Japanese video game version is further away from the Valley’s bottom, whereas the American film (Netflix) version is located very close to it.
