“The Role of School Principal in the Effective Operation of a School Unit: Teachers’ Conceptions”

Modern education systems are characterized by increasing demands for effectiveness and quality. In this context, the purpose of the school is redefined, the role of the school principal changes and at the same time new leadership models based on learning emerge. The present work investigates the role played by the principal - leader in the effective operation of the school unit through quantitative research. A sample of 100 teachers of the Prefecture of Attica secondary education was used. The results of the research show the contribution mainly of the distributive and transformational form of leadership in this direction. In addition, it is highlighted the importance of creating a common vision on the part of the principal of secondary education, the emphasis on the human factor and the cooperation between the school staff, the clear goal setting, the effective planning, as well as the creation of a positive climate in the school.
