Pericle’ s funeral oration: rhetorical analysis
Summary:
This essay was prepared in the context of the inter-university master’s degree «Rhetoric, Human Sciences and Education» of National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.
The subject of the present work is the study of « Pericle’ s funeral oration » regarding its structure as a rhetorical text. Basic aims are to demonstrate the main techniques of persuasion, to identify and then named the arguments that the orator exploits in order to persuade the audience and finally recognise and highlight the figures of speech with which adorns the declamation. In this way, our pursuit is to demonstrate the role of the orator and the power of rhetorical art, which is based on rules and tricks that are over time treated in each script that is trying to persuade for the truth.
Pericle’ s epitaph ratio is not a traditional epitaph. The considered peroration is different from other similar ones as the orator does not focus on the dead’s heroic achievements while at the same time lacking the lament for the fallen. In contrast, the difference between democratic Athens and oligarchic Sparta is outlined, Athens’ and its exemplary leader’ s paramount picture of development and greatness is being commended, impresses the incitement to the survivors and Athens’ high political and moral values are highlighted before it is tarnished by the many woes, with the first of the plague.

In addition, speech’s construction is so structured and the ideals’ projection of the Athenian lifestyle as successful that automatically contrasts with the respective Spartan ideals demonstrating the Laconian conservatism and the inertia of the Peloponnesian alliance. Nonetheless, undeniably the funeral oration under consideration structures and reflects the Athenian citizen’s portrait. In the substance, the speech under examination is devoted to the Athenian force in order to praise it while at the same time, it is rife with lofty sentiments for democracy, citizens’ obligations, the quality of leaders, the value of the courage and the responsibilities of women towards state. In this way, it is composed the most monumental declaration of democratic theory that we dispose today.
