«Forest fires: The collaboration of the competent authorities during the fire season and the participation of the local residents in actions aiming to the prevention of forest fire occurrences. Case Study: Area of Thrakomakedones & Panorama»

The present dissertation highlights the issue of the danger of forest fires that break out within the wildland-urban interface. The forest fires that break out every year have catastrophic economic social environmental consequences at the settlement areas which they affect, while, in a continuously changing environment of climate change, it is a phenomenon affecting the global community in the future, too. The priority of the parties involved in the area of prevention as well as in the area of control and containment of the fires needs to be the protection of human life and the decrease of the negative consequences that are caused by such incidents. In our country, every summer, the state mechanism is on alert during the fire season for the effective coping of forest fires. According to new Schemes and Protocols of intervention, each authority must have exact knowledge of its jurisdictions, as these are derived from the above mentioned schemes and protocols. Overall, it is vital that there be a central guidance so that there can be an effective cooperation among the various and different authorities involved. The areas near the forest are declared as vulnerable if there is a fire. The residents of these settlements should be alert every summer and proceed to specific prevention actions that will protect not only their lives but their properties and possessions, too. The goal of this dissertation is, initially, the presentation of the phenomenon of forest fires and, in addition, the recording of the need for constant and harmonious cooperation of the state authorities that are involved in the issue of forest fires. An important part of this dissertation is dedicated to the participation of local population is actions of preparation and prevention, as well as to the extension of knowledge and level of information in relation to the issue studied. Therefore, the triptych Preparation- Sensitization-Prevention is what everyone should apply so that there can be an increase in the level of protection of the human life and of the environment from the danger of forest fires.
