Translated title:

Spanish-language literature and the Greek press: Nea Estia and O Kyklos

Summary:

The purpose of this thesis is to create a catalogue of translated literary Spanish works
published in the Greek journals Nea Estia and O Kyklos: Fylla tou Logou kai tis Technis, between
the years 1930-1947. This research reviews and catalogues works or extracts in the light of the
historical context in which they were translated, i.e. the possible historical reasons that led to the
translation of a work or a specific author. In addition, the language of origin of the translation will
be sought, given the function - mainly - of French as the mediation language of the era.
Furthermore, the translator himself and his work will be approached, in relation to the fact that few
were familiar with Spanish language during that period. In the conclusions drawn from this thesis,
the quantity of works translated directly from Spanish is estimated, as well as which are the other
languages of the origin of the translation. Similarly, are examined the reasons that led to the
selection of the translated works, the writers in relation with the social situation of their time and the role of the translator.
