Overview of the spread of alien species of benthic foraminafera in the Mediterranean
Summary:
The transport of marine species to areas outside their natural boundaries began at the same time as human marine activity. The Mediterranean Sea, after the opening of the Suez Canal, is becoming one of the most affected areas by biological invasions. Among other things, several foreign species of benthic foraminafera have been found in the Mediterranean region, originating in the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean, the Indian Ocean and the Red Sea. The present work is a bibliographic review of benthic foraminafera species in the Mediterranean, in which two (2) cryptogenic (due to lack of molecular genetic data) and fifty (50) aliens are mentioned, of which only Amphistegina lobifera (Larsen, 1976) is considered invasive due to its significant ecological impact.
