Examination of the relationship between maternal perinatal depression and infants' emotional and behavioral difficulties": a retrospective cohort study
Summary:
Introduction: Maternal perinatal depression is the most common mental disorder during pregnancy and the postpartum period, affecting 10-15% of women. Apart from the adverse impact on women themselves, perinatal depression has negative outcomes on offspring’s short-term physical development, as well as their long-term and lifelong mental health. Purpose: The present retrospective cohort study examined maternal perinatal depressive symptomatology and its association with infants' emotional and behavioral difficulties in greek population. Methods: The study sample comprised 46 women that had visited the Women’s Mental Health Clinic of Eginition University Hospital during the period 2017-2020. Women were divided into 2 groups (clinical and subclinical) according to their scores on the perinatal depression screening tool, EPDS. The thesis draws on the analysis of an original survey (Child Behavior Checklist 1.5-5, completed by the infants’ mothers) administered to 46 women patients, coupled with the analysis of data collected from the systematic study of their individual files (demographics, EPDS, M.I.N.I., COPE, Life Events Scale) from the Women’s Clinic records. Results: Maternal depression and severity of depressive symptoms were significantly related to higher levels of internalizing, externalizing, and general psychopathology (p=<0,05), apart from infants’ aggressive behavior (p=0,206). Also, higher scores were recorded in infants of mothers diagnosed with clinical prenatal, postpartum and perinatal depression. Conclusions: These findings suggest that prenatal, postnatal and perinatal depression overall can have an adverse effect on emotional and behavioral infants’ development. It therefore seems critical for women’s and their offsprings’ mental health to develop punctual and preventive interventions in order to avoid harmful consequences.
