Summary:
The subject of this paper is the institution of the family in Crete during the period of Venetian rule on the island (1204-1669), focusing on the case of the family of the Greek Orthodox Venetians Kallergis. More specifically, the study focuses on that part of the family, called ‘Mylopotamos’, that received the Venetian nobility. The research interest of the work is located in two periods of history: in the first two centuries of Venetian rule on the island (13th-14th century) and in the last two (16th-17th century), as there is a lack of sufficient information to the outline life and the action of the family members during the 15th century. The Kallergis, a family with Byzantine roots, after the occupation of Crete by the Venetians managed to penetrate the new institutional ruling class by showing a supportive attitude to Venetians, while actively participating in the public life of the island. In order to consolidate and further expand their position in the social and political environment of their time, they created kinship networks through marriage, with the most important houses of Venetian nobles of Crete. Based on the material extracted from bibliography and mainly from published sources, it is presented on the one hand genealogical and property data of the Kallergis family, on the other hand the structure and operation of the specific house, to a certain extent. Finally, it is highlighted the position and the action of this family in the society, the administration, the economy, the Church, the material and the spiritual life of the island.
