Summary:
In the present work, an attempt is made to achieve a dual purpose. On the one hand, to understand how modern societies operate and prosper on the basis of institutions, and on the other hand, to clarify and highlight the role of Policing in promoting social welfare. The work is structured in three parts/chapters, with one being more technical. The first part refers to Human Society, which extensively describes the concepts of Institutions, Freedom, Justice, Prosperity, and the role of the Rule of Law. The second part, which is more technical, deals with the nature of goods and services, focusing mainly on the public and it is where the connection with the Police is made. It also describes basic economic concepts, such as production, supply, demand, and production capacity, necessary to delve into the last chapter. The third part, which is the most important section of this work, offers an extensive analysis of Policing, its role in modern societies, and the reason for its very existence. The Crime Market is adequately analyzed and the work of the Police is linked to the Cost of Crime. Finally, the importance of science and managerial economics in improving policing and consequently in social welfare is outlined.
