Formation of lignite deposits and the analysis of mining activity in the Greek data
Summary:
The scope of this dissertation is to provide a model of geological interpretation of lignite deposits, the method of extraction and combustion, as well as the way of exploitation and use of lignite in Greece for the operation of Steam Power Plants (A.H.Σ). Finally, we will analyze the economic importance of lignite deposits, as well as their environmental impact.
The solid fuel resources in Greece are almost exclusively lignite. Lignite continues to this day to be the most competitive domestic source of primary energy for Greece. This is mainly due to the existing large exploitable lignite deposits that are presented in Greece.
The initial study and the detailed planning of the exploitation are necessary for the economic exploitation of the deposit. Based on the results of the study, the total volume of geological reserves is calculated, as well as the reserves that can be considered exploitable under certain economic and technical conditions. The design of the exploitation is directly influenced by the topographic relief and the geological formations of the area.
The lignite activity that develops mainly in Western Macedonia but also in Megalopolis, ranks Greece in the 2nd place among the lignite producing countries of the European Union and the 5th place in the world.
