Summary:
The present bachelor thesis analyses the palynological investigation of seafloor sediments from a multicore (WF-S2) from the Elefsis Bay, West Attica (southern Greece) and cover the last 300 years. The main achievement is to reconstruct the evolution of the vegetation in Elefsis and try to see whether and how the human presence has its impact on it, especially from the Ancient Greece until today which is significantly high. The climate, the geological conditions, the soil composition and the human presence are the main factors contributing to the evolution of the vegetation. The pollen data show no recorded climate oscillations during the late Holocene, though the great human presence is imprinted with favoured to the human plants spreading while others no needed retreat. Pastoral activities seem to be one of the biggest human activities in the area as it is indicated by the high continuous spread of the olive trees and secondary from other plants which stand for animal husbandry, an activity that later will be replaced when the industrial revolution occurred. The results follow the line between the natural landscape and the human impact on it until the recorded differences stopped to tell one from another.
