Summary:
The environmental problems created by anthropogenic activities are a modern problem that needs to be addressed immediately. A large percentage of pollutants, which are attracted during the hydrocarbon extraction stage, could be avoided by using Renewable Energy Sources against compatible energy sources.
Wind energy is one of the most widespread and modern forms of energy, which with rational use could be a pillar of energy for RES. The benefits that wind energy could offer are varied. First of all, it would contribute to the energy autonomy of the islands, thus significantly reducing the cost of energy consumption for the inhabitants. Also, the environmentally degraded areas due to hydrocarbon extraction (eg Megalopolis) would be limited and protected.
The aim of this dissertation is to analyse the method applied for the positioning of a wind park in Lesvos Island using the Geographic Information Systems. The procedure includes the exclusion of areas through the exclusion criteria and the prioritization of the most suitable areas. The criteria by which the above procedures are performed are indicated by the National Framework for Planning and Sustainable Development (ΕΠΣΧΑΑ) for RES.
