Summary:
The music documentaries Buena Vista Social Club (1999) and Cafe de los Maestros (2008), through a critical/comparative approach, become the vehicle to explore the way in which commercialization, in the context of world capitalism, influences the construction of visual representations of musical cultures and identities. The two films are visually and acoustically discussed and, among other things, issues of nostalgia, folklorization, authenticity and western domination are raised.
