Adherence of patients with type ΙΙ diabetes to injectable treatments
Summary:
Patients' non-compliance with medication is a major medical problem worldwide. The reasons that cause it are many and varied. Adherence to chronic treatments in particular is frustrating in many cases of chronic diseases. Adherence to antiglycemic agents in patients with diabetes has been shown to be generally low and specific to injectable therapies. Non-compliance is affected by many factors, such as tolerability, efficacy, side effects, cost of drugs, complexity of the treatment regimen (frequency and route of administration, number of additional factors in the treatment regimen, etc.) and provider-patient interaction. Adherence to injectable therapies, such as insulin or glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) analogues, is very low, especially if multiple daily injections are prescribed.
In our study, a total of 234 patients with type II diabetes (108 women and 126 men) were treated with per os (tablets) with at least one antiglycemic agent with or without an injectable agent. At least one injectable agent was added to these patients and / or the existing one was modified. It was found that 9.5% of the total percentage of patients discontinued treatment with injectable agents (either insulin or glucagon-like peptide 1) with the prescription made by other treating physicians in per os treatment for a certain period of time. It seems that the most important reasons for stopping or generally not complying with the treatment were the occurrence of side effects, the difficulty of the injection treatment and finally financial reasons. It is worth noting that patient education by treating physicians significantly reduced patient errors in the use of insulin and GLP1 analogues, increasing compliance by approximately 20 percentage points.
