Challenges in credit risk management due to climate change - The interaction of climate change risk with credit risk
Summary:
Climate change is a global phenomenon with strong ramifications in all sectors of the economy and society. After the Industrial Revolution, human activities intensified climate change, causing significant problems associated primarily with the greenhouse effect. The changes of recent decades are enormous as well as the extreme weather events observed throughout the planet, but additional permanent weather changes are expected that will affect the economy and society. Therefore, credit risk in the portfolios of financial institutions and insurance companies is now expected and it is now necessary to include them in risk forecasts and risks related to climate change. However, it is almost certain that some of the losses that banking and insurance portfolios may suffer from climate disasters will have to be remedied with public funding, increasing States ' public debt. For this reason, central banks from around the world work together to find ways to predict and respond effectively in the event of extreme weather events, while the international community works together and aligns its financing and transition practices to a green economy.
