Summary:
The global financial crisis of 2008 led to a revision of the rules of regulation, operation and supervision of banks, with the aim of enhancing their stability and soundness, through the adoption of the amended Basel III Pact, the implementation of which had significant effects on the banking system. The aim of this thesis is to investigate the impact of Basel III on the profitability and efficiency of European banks, taking into account the three main pillars of the Pact, over a period of 13 years (2007-2019). According to the research results, it was found that the capital requirements ratio had a negative impact on the synthetic rate of efficiency (return on assets and equity, net interest income margin, loan-to-assets ratio and number of assets), while the leverage ratio did not appear to have a statistically significant effect. It was also found that the liquidity ratio had a significant effect, which was positive or negative on a case-by-case basis, and that the implementation of Basel III led to a reduction in revenue in the European banking system.
