Summary:
The exercise of economy could be regarded as the application of exactitude of an informal Canon intangibly constituted in the pastoral conscience of responsible shepherds aiming at the unhindered attainment of an ultimate objective, by transcending the historical forms of the Sacred Canons. The conventional and juridical are surpassed by that which commends freedom from bonds, – even if those bonds are sacred, – namely, the exercise of economy during a given part of the Church’s journey towards the end times. The exercise of economy does not equate to the non-application of exactitude, but rather to the provision of economy. This distinction is very subtle, and yet it is essential to the Sacred Canons’ self-consciousness. This perspective relieves economy of its negative assessment as a non-observance of exactitude, and, what is more, it affords it with a positive value in the journey toward salvation.
