Modern myths about sexual aggression, gender roles and modern sexism in Medicine and Nursing students
Summary:
The aim of the present study was to explore the acceptance of modern myths about sexual aggression (ΑΜΜSA), the attitudes towards gender roles (AGR) and modern sexism (MS) in medicine and nursing students. AMMSA is defined as those culturally and socially determined false beliefs towards sexual violence. AGR are defined as behaviors who are considered to be aligned with gender stereotypes. MS comprises more subtle types of gender discrimination. The sample of the present study is consisted of 380 students of the Medicine and Νursing faculties in Greece. 4 questionnaires were used: Demographic characteristics questionnaire, AMMSA, SRES-B and MSS. It was a web survey, using the method of convenience sampling. Results showed that there is a statistically significant difference in accepting modern myths about sexual aggression according in terms of gender, faculty and family status· men, nursing students and being in a relationship seem to disagree less with the modern myths about sexual aggression. Sex role egalitarianism was statistically significant higher for women and medicine students, while modern sexism was statically significant higher for men. Acceptance of modern myths about sexual aggression was negative correlated with sex role egalitarianism and positive corelated with modern sexism. Sex role egalitarianism scale was negative corelated with modern sexism. Regression analysis revealed that more holding fewer egalitarian attitudes and modern sexism seem to predict higher acceptance of modern myths about sexual aggression. Less high AMMSA and MS seem to predict more egalitarian attitudes. Also, less high AMMSA and more and more egalitarian attitudes towards gender roles seem to predict attitudes that support modern sexism.
