Τhe reasons for patients to attend the Emergency Department of a provincial hospital
Summary:
Introduction: The Emergency Department (ED) plays a critical role in the provision
of inpatient emergency medical services, as it is responsible for the effective
management of emergencies and acute health conditions, while acting as a safety net
for the health system.
The Aim of this study is to highlight the reasons for patients to attend the ED of a
provincial hospital, as well as the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of the cases
managed by this department.
Methodology: The survey was conducted on a population of 1,088 patients who visited
the ED of the General Hospital of Argos over a period of one month and recorded their
demographic characteristics, the causal factors that led them to seek help in the ED,
how they came to the ED, the application or no of outpatient examination and medical
interventions and the respective outcomes.
Results: The study found that 30.1% of patients were over 65 years old, with the
remaining 69.9% being almost evenly shared among the other age groups. 81.0% were
Greeks and 63.1% were insured, while 89.4% came to the ED by private car or on foot.
The highest percentages regarding the symptomatology were recorded in the case of
musculoskeletal and general symptoms (27.7% and 19.5%, respectively), and only in
13.2% no kind of outpatient clinical examination was applied. The percentage of cases
that did not require medical care was found to be high (28.6%), while hospitalization
was followed for 24.5% of them.
Conclusions: Based on the findings, it can be argued that EDs act as a safety net and
as the first entry point to the ESY for a large percentage of patients, who could be
directed to other levels and especially to primary care.
