Original Title:
Μελέτη των πολυφωνικών ηχοχρωμάτων του Σαξοφώνου: extended techniques, multiphonics, cluster runs
Translated title:
A Study on the Saxophone polyphonic timbre: extended techniques, multiphonics, cluster runs
Summary:
The saxophone is one of the most popular wind instruments and its unique timbre has been a trademark of jazz music. The versatility and the large timbre spectrum of the instrument has been the material for the musician to use in a composition or an improvisation. The indviduality and the flexibility on the development of the sound has made the instrument quite popular within the free jazz and avant-garde scene since the late 50s. A new sound was developed since that period with different characteristics compared to the traditional sound of wind and brass instruments. The new sound has been the field for research and experimentation for the musician seeking new material on a quest for musical expression.
The purpose of this dissertation is the study of specific multiphonics on the saxophone, the analysis of the different frequencies they develop and their harmonic relationship. There will also be a morphological analysis of the consonance of different tonal areas and how that factor, in addition with the dynamics, influence the timbral development of the sound. The dissertation topic was derived by the interest of exploring the saxophone timbre and the choices the musician has while developing the sound in an improvisation.
