Assisted reproduction and stress prior to conception
Summary:
Due to the reported effectiveness of in vitro fertilization (IVF), this method of treating infertility is increasingly used. The experience of IVF can be a source of psychological and emotional difficulties for couples trying to have a child.
The treatment of IVF seems to be particularly difficult emotionally and with this in mind, the focus of this review is the discussion of infertility as more than a medical issue, of great interest to social scientists worldwide, as it affects the functioning of individuals, couples and families around the world. Psychiatric disorders related to the treatment of infertility and the possible impact of these symptoms on the outcome of reproductive therapy are examined, as well as the effectiveness of psychological interventions on both distress and pregnancy rates.
The research findings confirm the effects of infertility-related stress on both emotional and marital discomfort. However, it has been found that stress associated with infertility affects a person's emotional distress more than marital satisfaction.
Despite the growing body of research suggesting an impact of in vitro fertilization (IVF) on imprinted genes and epigenetics, few studies have examined the effects of it on underlying infertility or prenatal stress.
There is a need to conduct studies on the effect of supportive social interactions on the functionality of couples undergoing in vitro fertilization.
