Summary:
Introduction: PICS-F delineates the psychological effects of critical illness on the family members of a patient admitted in the ICU and includes all psychological symptoms that family members may encounter while their beloved person is at the hospital or after his hospitalization.
Aim: The aim of the present study was the investigation and the recording of all the potential psychological disorders that may be presented to family members with PICS-F for a period of 3 months after hospitalization. In addition, the investigation, and the recording of the impact of these psychological disorders to the family members’ quality of daily life.
Methods: The study was conducted via the utilization of a questionnaire that assessed the mental health and the quality of life of patients admitted to the ICU relatives. The questionnaire was completed several times by the participants. The investigation was completed at a three-month follow-up. The participants of the study were 24 relatives that voluntarily participated.
Results: The family members of the patients that were admitted into the ICU reposted elevation of symptoms of depression and stress, that were resistant even after three months. They also reported diminution of their quality of life, according to sever biomarkers that were investigated.
Discussion: The hospitalization into the ICU constitutes a traumatic experience for both the patient and his relatives. Indeed, family members tend to present mental disorders and decreased quality of life, even months after this incident. Herein, it is fundamental and crucial for healthcare professionals to diagnose and treat promptly PICS-F.
