The use of the high flow nasal cannula in newborns and infants with bronchiolitis
Summary:
Introduction: Bronchiolitis is a viral infection of the lower respiratory tract of the human body and mainly affects young children and infants under 2 years. The high flow nasal cannula system is a non-invasive way through which the respiratory support of the pediatric patient with bronchiolitis is achieved with better results than the standard oxygen therapy while the side effects are limited.
Purpose. The purpose of this Systematic Review was to investigate the use of high flow nasal cannula in neonates and infants with bronchitis.
Material - Methodology: The research was conducted assessing the literature published online from January 2010 to September 2020. For the current systematic review, complete publications were sought in the electronic databases Google Scholar and PubMed using the following keywords: Bronchiolitis, HFNC, High Flow Nasal Cannula, ventilation modes, infants and neonates, as well as combination of them.
Results: After a critical analysis of the literature from the 150 published articles, 16 met the inclusion criteria of the study. The 13 articles compare the high flow nasal cannula system with other forms of oxygen therapy based on safety and outcome (need for further treatment escalation, length of stay, intubation rates). The rest of them focused on evaluation of clinical and laboratory criteria that can be used as prognostic markers for high flow nasal cannula treated patients.
Conclusions: A review of the current literature shows that the use of high flow nasal cannula is a safe method of oxygen therapy with potential benefit compared to older interventional and non-invasive methods.
