Composition of Sound Portraits of Poets: Techniques and aesthetic approach
Summary:
This dissertation is about processing poetic sound text with techniques of electroacoustic music.
In particular, there is attempted the composition of four Sonic Portraits of poets with the
intention to shed light on their personalities and work. Α literature review is written about the
different non-traditional forms of poetry that emerged in the 20th century and the forms of
Sound Poetry that make use of techniques of Electroacoustic Music and Computer Music.
Furthermore, there is a presentation of the techniques being used in these compositions to
process the recorded speech and sound, while afterwards, the term remediation is defined,
which, combined with Jannis Psychopedis’s Visual Portraits of poets, served as a springboard
for the creation of the four Sonic Portraits of poets in this dissertation. Towards the end, an
analysis considering the technical and aesthetic qualities of these portraits is being made and
some qualitative conclusions are drawn from this process.
