Relations between nationalism and socialist movements in the Russian Empire and its successor states: The cases of Poland, Ukraine and Finland (1890-1922)
Summary:
This assertion deals with the influence of nationalism on the socialist movement of the Russian Empire until 1917 and its contribution to the founding of the new independent states that succeeded the empire. Someone would seem to wonder how internationalist socialist ideology can be influenced by a diametrically opposed ideology? The paper intends to answer this question, based on the social, political and economic peculiarities of the Russian Empire. It will focus mainly on the cases of Poland, Ukraine, Finland and less on the Russian labor movement itself, because in the above -mentioned areas nationalism had the greatest influence on the socialist parties.
The work is divided into three main subsections. The first, which covers the period 1890-1905, studies the establishment of the "national" socialist parties of the Russian Empire and the ideological struggle that took place within them. In addition, in the same section, extensive references are made to the social and economic reality of the enslaved peoples of the Russian Empire, which in my opinion are useful for understanding the creation of a particular ideology.
The second section covers the period 1905-1917, a period during which Russia experienced two wars and three revolutions. The action of the socialist parties of the enslaved peoples of Russia from the Revolution of 1905 to the October Revolution of 1917 and the ideological elaborations of the Russian labor movement on the national question are examined.
The third section of the assertion deals with the period of the Russian Civil War (1918-1922). This section deals with the contribution of the socialist parties of the former Russian Empire to the establishment of nation-states, as well as their attitude towards communist ideology and Soviet power.
