Το ΑΚΕΛ στην παρανομία 1955-59. Αθέατες όψεις μιας γνωστής ιστορίας
Translated title:
The outlawed AKEL, 1955-59. Unknown aspects of a known tale
Summary:
This dissertation is a case study that examines the issue of AKEL's illegality during the 1955-1959 period. It seeks to highlight the way in which the party operated and acted while it had been outlawed. It is an attempt to remove the veil that for years has covered the party's role during the period of the national liberation struggle. The questions raised concern the reorganization of the party and its movements within these four years, in relation to the liberation of Cyprus from the colonial thrall. The study also examines the coexistence and rivalry between AKEL and EOKA in various aspects of the socio-political spectrum. It explores the left party's attitude towards the national liberation organisation, as well as the interactions of the two in the attempts to resolve the Cyprus dispute. Focusing on the key moments of AKEL's illegal action, an attempt is made to understand the context of its choices from the beginning to the end of the struggle and the establishment of the Republic of Cyprus. The research is based on a combination of primary and secondary sources, which highlight the ideological and organizational changes and shifts of AKEL, from illegal action to political legitimization.
