The social and demographic profile of Greek MPs: aspects of representation 1996-2015
Summary:
This essay deals with the parliamentary representation in modern Greece starting from the 9th Parliamentary period (September 1996 - March 2000) until 17th Parliamentary period (September 2015 – July 2019). It examines these social and demographical factors that are considered (in relevant bibliography) to be crucial in shaping political representation.
The turning point of the above period was, without doubt, the economic crisis that started during the 12th parliamentary period (2007-2009). All parliamentary functions from that time on-wards were taking place in the context of the crisis.
It is also argued that the results of the double elections of 2012 put an end to the bi-party political system. It is, nevertheless, equally important to define whether the deregulation of the political system of 2012 was also accompanied by an important reshuffling of the political personnel. If that is the case, there is obviously an added value in defining the factors that led to that. Questions related to whether the crisis has accentuated the position of career politicians, especially those related to mass media should also be examined.
Important changes in the Parliamentary representation to the European Parliament in Brussels are also examined and compared with the above mentioned reshuffling in the national parliament, with the aim of identifying similarities of discrepancies between the two.
