Stress at work. Cross-sectional study
Summary:
Research has shown that work stress has serious effects on mental and physical health. Although this issue has attracted the attention of researchers worldwide, studies conducted in Greece are limited. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to examine the association between depression, anxiety, stress, sleep and the Demand-Control-Support model. The questionnaire was distributed electronically through various social networking platforms, to complete questionnaires that assessed depression, anxiety, stress, sleep, psychological demands, decision latitude and social support at work. Nine hundred Greek adult employees (82.4% women and 17.6% men) with a median age of 34 years participated in the study. The results, after controlling for age and gender, showed that psychological demands were a positive predictor for depression, anxiety, stress and while decision latitude and social support were negative predictors. Psychological demands were also a positive predictor for sleep disturbances, while decision latitude and social support within the work environment were negative predictors for sleep disturbances. Psychological demands at work seem to be strongest predictor for the possible development of mental health issues and sleep disturbances. This needs to be taken into consideration by work organizations to improve employees’ wellbeing. In the context of the present study, the Demand-Control-Support Questionnaire, a short instrument that measures psychosocial factors in the work environment was validated.
