Contribution of Dance in the constant formation of cultural Identity of Sarakatsani in the Greek prefecture Preveza: The Meeting at the 'Speepfold'
Summary:
Dance as a cultural practice, consists one of the basic lines of the construction and formation of a cultural group’s identity. Cultural identity is a dynamic concept which is continuously shaped and transformed over time, affected by socio-historical factors. Consequently, dance reforms simultaneously on the basis of homogeneity and differentiation. The field of this research is the study of the dancing practices at an annual festival of Sarakatsanoi group of Preveza, a city in northwest Greece, as an indicator of cultural identity. Purpose of this survey is the study of dance in such festivals as a element that attributes to formation of cultural identity of cultural groups, through the case of Saraktsanoi festival in Preveza. Specifically, using dance as an analytical tool, aims to highlight the contribution of dancing procedure in formation of cultural identity, through the spontaneous participation of Sarakatsanoi of Preveza in the dancing feast of the festival. The collection of data is based on ethnographic survey as applied to the study of dance, Dancing repertoire is recorded with Labanotation system, and analysis of choreographic composures is performed by morphological method. The interpretation of data, is attempted under the theoretical opposition “Us/Them”, in context of the multiple “existence” of dance. From the data analysis, it is showed that this specific cultural group has reformed overtime, their dancing repertoire, affected by social and historical factors. Alongside, gradual influences from “second existence” towards the “community” seem to be happening. Finally, it seems that through dancing, as a cultural practice in the festival, the group of Sarakatsanoi in Preveza, negotiate their parallel identities with the “Others”.
