Views and perceptions on unaccompanied minors - From child protection to adulthood and social integration
Summary:
To date, there is limited evidence on whether the services provided to unaccompanied
children asylum seekers, accommodated in child protection facilities, contribute to their
transition to adulthood and social integration. Τen semi-structured in-depth interviews
were conducted in order to explore the experiences and views of unaccompanied boys
aged between 17-18 years old, living in shelters and originating from some
representative countries, concerning the above services. The findings suggest that child
protection shelters respond adequately mainly to their basic needs, legal issues and
psycho-social support. Significant gaps were identified in education, leisure activities and
their preparation for independent living. Consequently, the participation of unaccompanied minors and the inclusion of their views, aside from being a fundamental
right and integral part of their protection, contributes in understanding their challenges,
needs and aspirations and may guide us for more appropriately tailored services and
interventions in the formation of child protection and migration policies.
