Girls Playing Football: (Un) Doing Gender Through Football Performances And Narratives »
Summary:
The purpose of this study was to investigate how adolescent girls who play football perceive gender roles, norms and stereotypes and how they engage in role-playing processes, through which gender roles and performances are redefined. The study involved six girls aged 12-18, who play football on local football teams. Data collection was accomplished through semi-structured interviews, which were conducted live, through video conferencing platforms or by telephone. The data analysis was performed through content analysis techniques and the main results were : (a) Football as a positive experience (b) Gender stereotypes and gender norms in boys' groups (c) Football as a gender neutral sport (d) Gender roles may not be perceived as such (e) Gender norms and stereotypes as limiting factors of participation in football. The analysis of the results showed that gender norms and stereotypes can indeed restrict girls participation in football ; however the girls who participated in the research didn’t report to experience role pressure (ie incompatibility between gender roles and their athletic role), precisely because the way they define gender roles is not perceived as incompatible with the role of the athlete. Therefore football can be perceived as a field where both gender construction (doing gender) and reconstruction practices (redoing gender) practices take place.
