Summary:
This dissertation examines the gradual construction of modern homosexual identity in England during the 19th century, by focusing on the prevalent gender and sexual norms, the relevant statutes, the development and the propagation of the medical discourse, the specific terms used to describe homosexuals and homosexual behaviours, and the practices of informal social control. This dissertation aims to demonstrate the way these factors affected the construction of a distinctive homosexual identity.
In the 19th century, it seems that the conception of a distinctive homosexual identity is being formed in England, even though the number of men who fully identify as homosexuals was limited. The prevalence of new strictly heterosexual masculinities, the intensifying legal control of sexuality, the societal reaction to homosexual behaviours, the terms used in public and in the medical discourse in reference to homosexuality, and the sexological theories amplified the distinction between homosexuality and heterosexuality, but also led to publications in favor of homosexuality and to the intensifying effort of these men to define their self-identity, mainly towards the end of 19th century.
