Summary:
Purpose: The purpose of this research was to investigate the animation services that offered by large Hotels and resorts in Greece, as well as to evaluate the importance of competencies needed by an animateur in order to be effective in his/her job.

Methodology: The methodology used was the quantitative research. The data were collected by the questionnaire “Recreation, Tourism and Animation. The work model of animateurs in Greek hotels”, used in similar research by Papageorgiou, Kosta & Tzetzis (2012). However, it was modified for the needs of the present research and was tested by three academicians for its face validity. Then, it was sent via email to n=73 resorts hotels, 30 of which replied (43.00%).

Results: The results of the data analysis showed that the majority of the participants were male (f=19, 63.30%), young (aged 31-40 years old) (f=12, 40.00%), with a high level of education (University degree/bachelor) (f=13, 43.30%). The resorts that were examined were mostly “All Inclusive Hotels” (f=11, 36.70%) employing animateurs (f=25, 83.30%), mainly up to two persons (f=21, 84.00%) providing related programs (f=21, 70.00%) suitable to all ages (f=23, 76.70%), in specially designed facilities and venues (f=24, 80%), such as swimming pools (f=28, 93.30%), playgrounds (f=25, 83.30%) and gyms (f=24, 90.00%). Regarding the competencies of an animateur, the participants in this research consider as the most important the knowledge of a foreign language (f=29, 96.70%), the understanding of client needs and culture (f=25, 83.30%), as well as imagination and creativity (f=24, 80.00%).
