ANALYSIS OF UPPER QUATERNARY SENDIMENTS IN A SEA CORE RETRIEVED FROM MYRTOON SEA

The purpose of this thesis is to identify and evaluate the stratigraphy and its lithofacies from core M-15-39 which was retrieved from Myrtoon sea from the depth of 725 m in South Aegean in order to understand the depositional sedimentary processes during the upper quaternary period . During this period many sea level changes took place in the eastern Mediterranean. Those changes can be detected through sedimentation and core data by relating and comparing the various lithostratigraphic phases with the published paleodepths and isotopic data .Core M-15-39 was analyzed for magnetic susceptibility , lithofacies color , carbonate contents , granulometry ,XRD analyses, planimeter measurements and then the results were presented in diagrams . In addition, some general information such as the geological setting of Myrtoon sea ,the marine geology of south Aegean ,the seismic and volcanic activity are also included in this thesis for a better view and understanding of Myrtoon sea .
