UPPER QUATERNARY SEA LEVEL VARIATIONS AS EVIDENCED IN MARINE SEISMIC PROFILES ON AGII THEODORI, NW SARONIC GULF
Summary:
The present diploma thesis is based on the study of primary sub-bottom reflection profiles of high to medium resolution. A total length of 7 Km, seismic profiles were collected, with a boomer-type system. The distinction and interpretation of the seismic phases indicative of the displacement of the coastline during the low sea stands in the Upper Quaternary allows us their stratigraphic classification. From the interpretation of the seismic data, the inflection points of the prograding clinoform packages were identified and then correlated with the low sea level during the prominent marine Isotopic Stages MIS2, MIS6. The identified clinoform wedges and bounding surfaces of the prominent reflectors are compared with similar locations in the Aegean. The differentiation of the seismic phases allows us the compilation of the seismic stratigraphy of the Quaternary sediments in the area of Agii Theodori in the NW Saronic Gulf. The correlation was based on the existing models of coastline development but also on the comparison with neighboring areas and similar surveys in the Saronic Gulf. Finally, a paleoshorline map was extracted as well as isopach maps. The identification of the inflection points in the progradational clinoforms of the isotopic stages 2 and 6, at a lesser depth than the other parts of the basin was attributed either to the active tectonism uplift of the area or the isolation of the NW Saronic Gulf at the boundaries of Aegina – Glyfada, when the sea level descended below 96-98 m. This is an indication that the sea level of the paleo-lake of the NW Saronic Gulf was not identical with the lower level of the isotope stages 2 and 6 of the open sea of the Aegean.
