Comparison between winning and losing teams in the technical and tactical performance indicators of achieving final actions in the 2016-2017 Champions League groups
Summary:
The purpose of this paper was to study and analyze the technical-tactical profile of the teams that scored victories and those that suffered defeats during the Champions League for the 2016-2017 season. The ultimate goal is to find the rea-sons behind the success of the winning teams based on the main performance in-dicators.
132 Champions League matches (Win=66 αγώνες and Loss=66matches ) were analyzed for this purpose. The data were collected using the sports method of video analysis, and were subsequently recorded in Microsoft Excel. 18 perfor-mance indicators were selected for the analysis: goals scored, total shots (on-target and off-target), possession of the ball, possession based on time, entrances to the third of the field, entrances to the opponent's area, total passes, accurate passes, crosses, successful crosses, dribbles, successful dribbles, ball retrievals and ball retrievals to the opponent half and last claims of the ball and successful claims. Indicators of descriptive statistics, such as mean, standard deviation, min and max, and frequencies (f and% f) were used for statistical analysis. Respec-tively, for the comparison of the independent variables, the analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used. The significance level was set at p <0.05.
According to the results, the winning teams were ahead of the losing in the total goals they scored with an average of 2.6 goals per game against 0.5, in the total shots with an average per 14.3 against 8.3 and in accurate shots with 6.4 against. 2.8, all differences in the averages were found to be statistically significant. In addition, there was a significant difference in ball possession, with winning teams having 56.1% and losing teams 43.8%. A difference was also found in the en-trances to the opponent area between winners (19.6) and losers (11.7) (p <0.05). In regard to passes, the winning teams averaged 537.4 versus 465.4 (p <0.05). In addition, the winning teams made more dribbles (31.7) in comparison to those who lost (27.6). Moreover, the winners had a higher average recovery of ball, 55.3 in contrast to the losers who had 51.9 (p <0.05), in the recovery within the opponent half of the court the winning teams were ahead of the defeats with 11.2 against 8.8 (p <0.05).
In conclusion, the difference in odds between winners and losers of the Champi-ons League for the 2016-2017 season was reflected in the odds with the winning teams prevailing in all variables, thus justifying the victories they achieve in the organization. These results also provide important information for coaches who want to improve their team performance.
