Black women and american jazz in the 1960s and 1970s: The case of Nina Simone
Summary:
My dissertation deals with the position of black women in jazz in the 1960s and 1970s in America. I look at how black women jazz musicians from the rest of the american jazz music world are treated. I combine gender, race and politics in order to be able to come to some conclusions as far as black musicians are concerned. I have studied the controversies that prevailed between the black and the white race regarding the creation and evolution of jazz, as well as the racial discrimination that prevailed at that time. I am also referring to the gender discrimination that prevailed in the field of jazz, with the burden falling on women. Finally, I am referring to how these two distinctions affect black women jazz musicians more, since they are victims of both types of racism that starred at that time. In order to reach more reasonable conclusions I chose to study the life of a specific black jazz musician, Nina Simone. Through Nina Simone the connection with the political part is made, if she herself was active precise and claimed the human rights of blacks in american. In order to be able to find information about her life, I chose to analyze the documentary "What happened, miss Simone?", which is based exclusively on her life and the political climate that prevailed in the 1960s and 1970s in America.
