The representation of the refugee memory of Nea Lampsakos, Euboea, through a public art installation
Summary:
The present master's thesis aims to highlight the way in which public art is utilized, which in contact with the public, can function as a link between past and present, but also as a means of shaping new meanings and values. The theoretical framework of the present study draws upon the concepts of memory, identity, oblivion, trauma and Oral History – as a tool for recording oral testimonies – while the narration of the history of the refugees of Nea Lampsakos, Evia, clarifies the important role that memory played in its formation.
Drawing on findings from a quantitative survey conducted online, this project identified the interest of the people related to the area, in its refugee past, with this fact strengthening the intention to semantically design a public ephemeral art installation, which will aim to highlight refugee memory and identity of the community.
