Asylum seekers in Greece and Italy: From the evaluation of applications for protection to integration
Summary:
The thesis deals with the evaluation of applications for protection of asylum seekers in
Greece and Italy under the institutional framework of the European Union, as well as
the subsequent process of integration of refugees in the reception country, in this case
in Greece and Italy, in the fields of health, housing, education, and employment. The
methodology was based on the collection of data from legal texts of the European
Union, the agreements signed for the beneficiaries of international protection, the
national frameworks for implementation and the integration and integration programs
for refugees. The ways and criteria for evaluating applications for protection by each
Member State, the national integration programs of potential refugees, the areas of
integration and their effectiveness, are mentioned. The main question of this thesis is
whether the evaluation of protection applications is carried out with the right criteria
and in a legal framework that respects and promotes the rights of applicants. On the one
hand, national efficiency is examined in relation to the asylum policy of the European
Union and on the other hand, how the asylum process takes care of the individual
himself/herself, promotes his/her freedom and rights in the host country. The second
research question is whether and to what extent a successful integration is implemented
in the host country, specifically in Greece and Italy, that is to say, how and to what
extent the respective integration policies are implemented in all sectors, what is the state
care provision and ultimately what are the results and whether or not the integration of
immigrants in the Greek and Italian society is achieved. According to the data already
collected from the academic literature and the studies of international organizations, the
evaluation of asylum applications appears as a time consuming and laborious process,
presents gaps that need to be filled and should be made more accessible and
understandable by beneficiaries of protection. Integration into to the reception country,
especially for refugee populations, is a complex process, which lies not only in state
competence but also in individual and collective responsibility.
