Assessment of nurses' stress in pediatric oncology departments
Summary:
Pediatric oncology nurses are a special group of nurses who are exposed to a variety of stressors in their workplace. The purpose of the study is to investigate the stress of pediatric oncology nurses.
Material - Method: This is a non-invasive comparative study on a sample of 120 nurses working in pediatric departments of hematology - oncology and pediatric and pediatric surgery departments. The Nurse Stress Scale was used for data collection. The x2 test (chi-square test) was used to investigate the relationship between two categorical variables. Student's t-test was used to investigate the relationship between a quantitative variable following the normal distribution and a bisector variable. The homogeneity of the dispersion between the compared samples is checked with the Levene test. The data analysis was performed with the statistical package SPSS v. 26 and at the level of statistical significance 0.05.
Results: All nurses report experiencing statistically significant severe stress for all subscales of the NSS scale. Half of the nurses report experiencing stress often or very often, while the level of stress decreased with increasing seniority. A statistically significant correlation was observed between stress and death and "suffering" and a lack of staff support in pediatric oncology nurses who reported a statistically significantly lower correlation between stress and patient treatment uncertainty. Particularly stressful for pediatric oncology nurses are psychological, social, physical environment, workload, conflicts with nurses, supervisors, and physicians.
Conclusions: Pediatric oncology nurses experience stress often or very often while the psychological, social and physical environment are particularly stressful factors.
