Study of the detection of Long Life Particles in the muon detectors of the CMS experiment
Summary:
From 2019 the Large Hardron Colider (LHC) of CERN launched a major repair and upgrade program for the Phase 2 .The muon trigger which is located in the central region of the CMS is included in the upgrade program. Even though the detector can detect muons very efficiently, it has been proposed to be upgraded so it can detect Long Lived Particles (LLPs) too. In this work we present an algorithm which calculates a quantity we call Figure Of Merit (FOM), which gives us a measure of the efficiency of the detector on detecting LLPs. Furthermore we calculate these FOMs. The data used for this work are either generated from a simulation of the CMS experiment with Monte Carlo methods or Zero-Bias Data collected through the Run 2 (2015-2018) of the CMS experiment. The FOM shows that in the current detector the efficiency is largely dependent on the average distance that the particle can travel in its rest system.
